1 The child as scientist The goal of this paper is to clarify an important thesis related to human intellectual development. The thesis is stated in its most persuasive form in a recent bookby Allison Gopnik and Andrew Meltzoo Gopnik and Meltzoo, 1996. They say: We want to argue that the cognitive processes that underlie science are similar to, or indeed even identical with, the cognitive processes that underlie much of cognitive development." p. 32 The authors attempt to specify this thesis in several ways. For our part, it seems that the most straightforward reading is the following. 1 The little scientist" thesis: The theories that children construct of their physical and social environment result from the application of scientiic method to the data that are available to them.
